Georgia Governor & Council Journals 1778-1779 (vol. 6)
Edited by Mary Bondurant Warren
Subtitled "Savannah Under Siege," this volume covers the early Revolutionary War period in Georgia and the South. Volume 5 of this series ended with the departure of Royal Governor Wright, his Council and some Loyalists (Tories) from Georgia. Volume 6 gives eyewitness accounts of the attempts by the Rebels (also called Whigs) to establish civil government in Georgia. A map of the British parishes with Rebel county names helps genealogists figure out where ancestral lands were located during the colonial period.
The fragmented Council Journals from this tumultuous period have been augmented by Mrs. Warren with records from archives in England, Canada, and Georgia, as well as newspaper accounts from Savannah and Charleston, and personal letters by the Tory Governor, Patriot military commanders and private citizens, to make a very readable history.
